Write a good app brief
How to describe your app so the first build lands close to what you imagined.
Before you start
- None
- 1
Cover three things
What the app does, who will use it, and what matters most. "A shopping list for our family. Everyone sees the same list and can check items off. It has to be fast to add things" covers all three in three sentences.
- 2
Name the screens you imagine
If you can already see the app in your head, describe it screen by screen: "a start screen with today's tasks, a calendar view, and a settings screen". Concrete screens turn into concrete structure.
- 3
Describe the feel with examples
Colors, dark or light, and apps it should feel like are all useful: "dark theme with orange accents, feels like a fitness app". You can also attach screenshots of designs you like in the chat and ask the AI to match them.
- 4
Say what needs to be saved
The data is the backbone of the app. "Each workout has exercises, sets, weight and a date" tells the AI exactly what the database needs to hold.
- 5
Say up front whether users log in
Accounts change the shape of an app. If everyone shares data, or each user has their own, or no login is needed at all, say so in the brief instead of leaving it to a follow-up question.
- 6
Do not shrink your idea
Describe everything you want, even if it is a lot. The first build focuses on the core and lists the rest under "Planned after the first build", so a big brief becomes a roadmap instead of getting lost.
- 7
Write in your own language
You can write the brief in the language you want the app to be in. The app copy follows the language you choose during onboarding.
